Payton Butler, Dru Wilson, Ty Byrd, Joel Ellestad Obituary, DEKALB, TEXAS — Four young people have died following a tragic two-vehicle collision on US Highway 259 south of DeKalb, Texas, on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The crash claimed the lives of Payton Butler, 24; Dru Wilson, 23; Ty Byrd, 20; and Joel Ellestad, 22, leaving families, friends, schools, and communities across Northeast Texas mourning their sudden loss.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) Highway Patrol, the fatal crash involved a northbound Nissan Altima and a southbound Dodge Charger. Preliminary information indicates that the vehicles collided head-on, resulting in fatal injuries to all four individuals involved. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Joel Ellestad, known affectionately by many in his church community as “Little Joel,” was remembered as a kind-hearted young man with a strong devotion to his family, faith, and community. Friends and members of the regional faith community described him as someone who brought warmth and compassion to those around him. Following news of his passing, local congregations organized prayer support for the Ellestad family.

He was part of the Daingerfield Tigers athletic program and helped lead the school’s 4×100-meter relay team to a Texas UIL 3A State Championship title in 2021. Friends, teammates, and community members remembered Ty for his dedication, loyalty, and positive spirit.
Dru Wilson, 23, of DeKalb, was also identified as one of the victims of the crash. She was a former DeKalb High School student-athlete who competed in track and field events, including pole vaulting and hurdles. Coaches, teammates, and community members remembered her as a determined competitor who brought energy and commitment to everything she did.
