Nansun Shi Obituary, Hong Kong — Nansun Shi, the acclaimed Hong Kong film producer, executive, and co-founder of Film Workshop whose visionary leadership helped define the golden age of Hong Kong cinema and later produced the influential crime thriller Infernal Affairs, died on Monday at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. She was 75.

According to Film Workshop, the production company she co-founded with filmmaker Tsui Hark in 1984, Shi had experienced declining health since 2022 due to complications affecting her immune system. Recurrent infections in recent months reportedly led to multiple organ dysfunction. She died peacefully at 8:51 p.m. local time, surrounded by family and loved ones. Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced by the company.

Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, Shi became one of the most respected and influential figures in Hong Kong’s film industry. Widely recognized for her business acumen and creative vision, she played a pivotal role in expanding the global reach of Chinese-language cinema while helping shape Hong Kong’s cinematic boom during the 1980s. She was also among the earliest producers from Hong Kong to develop productions in mainland China, helping bridge two film industries that had rarely collaborated at the time.

Born and educated in Hong Kong, Shi studied statistics and computing at the Polytechnic of North London before returning home to begin her professional career in television with broadcasters including TVB and Rediffusion during the mid-1970s. She later entered the film industry in 1981 as executive director of Cinema City, where she oversaw administration, financing, international sales, and festival strategy. Her early contributions included successful productions such as Aces Go Places II and Till Death Do We Scare.

Shi’s enduring legacy was cemented through Film Workshop, the groundbreaking production company she established alongside Tsui Hark. Under their leadership, the studio became one of Hong Kong cinema’s most celebrated creative forces, producing landmark films including Shanghai Blues, Peking Opera Blues, A Chinese Ghost Story, the Once Upon a Time in China series, A Better Tomorrow, and The Killer. These productions helped introduce Hong Kong action cinema to audiences around the world. Although Shi and Tsui, who married in 1996, divorced in 2014, they continued collaborating professionally throughout their careers.

In 2002, Shi joined Media Asia as vice president and produced Infernal Affairs alongside Andrew Lau and John Chong. The critically acclaimed undercover police thriller revitalized Hong Kong’s film industry during a challenging period, inspired two sequels, and later served as the basis for Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning film The Departed. Her later work included collaborations with Bona Film Group on productions such as the Overheard series, The Great Magician, and A Simple Life. In 2007, she co-founded the international sales company Distribution Workshop, continuing to champion Asian cinema on the global stage until her death. Her final producing credit came with 2025’s Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants.

Shi’s remarkable contributions earned widespread international recognition. She served on the main competition juries at both the Cannes and Berlin film festivals and received numerous prestigious honors, including France’s Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Locarno Film Festival’s Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, the Berlinale Camera, and a lifetime achievement award jointly presented to her and Tsui Hark by the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2025. She was also regularly recognized among the most influential women in global film.

Nansun Shi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that transformed Hong Kong cinema and elevated Chinese-language filmmaking on the international stage. Her vision, leadership, and dedication inspired generations of filmmakers and producers, and her contributions will continue to resonate throughout the global film community.
