Kearney Fire, SMARTSVILLE, Calif. — Mandatory evacuations have been issued Tuesday afternoon as the Kearney Fire continues to burn in western Nevada County, east of Smartsville and southwest of Lake Wildwood, threatening structures and spreading at a rapid rate.
The vegetation fire was reported in the area of Kearney Court near Smartsville, where fire crews responded to a fast-moving blaze that had grown to approximately 41–60 acres by Tuesday evening. Officials said the fire was advancing quickly and posed a threat to nearby homes, power lines, and Highway 20.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders for zones NCO-E010 and NCO-E011, warning residents in those areas of an immediate threat to life and directing them to leave immediately. Evacuation warnings were also issued for zones NCO-E012, NCO-E014, and NCO-E017, with officials urging residents who may need additional time to evacuate, along with those with pets or livestock, to prepare to leave.
Firefighting crews from CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit and assisting agencies responded with multiple engines, water tenders, aircraft, air tankers, and helicopters. Officials reported that retardant lines had been placed around much of the fire as crews worked to slow its spread and protect threatened areas.
The fire also prompted road closures in the surrounding area, including portions of Highway 20 near Wild Turkey Lane, Melody, and Sloping Oaks. California Highway Patrol assistance was requested as the blaze moved close to the highway and emergency crews worked to manage traffic and evacuation efforts.
A temporary evacuation location was established for residents at the Penn Valley Library, located at 11240 Pleasant Valley Road in Penn Valley. A separate location for animals was made available at the Nevada County Fairgrounds at 11228 McCourtney Road in Grass Valley.
Residents in surrounding communities reported seeing smoke, ash falling, and power disruptions as the fire moved through the area. Community members shared messages encouraging neighbors to check on one another and assist those affected by the evacuation orders.
Emergency crews remain on scene working to contain the Kearney Fire and protect lives and property. Officials continue to urge residents to follow evacuation instructions, monitor updates from local authorities, and remain prepared as conditions develop.
