According to police, officers from the Omaha Police Uniform Patrol Bureau were dispatched to a residence in the 1600 block of South 55th Street after receiving a 911 call requesting a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal individual. Police said uniformed officers arrived at the home and attempted to make contact by knocking on the front door at approximately 5:50 p.m. Investigators stated that about one minute later, the situation escalated when a man inside the residence allegedly fired a weapon toward three responding officers.
Authorities reported that the officers moved to positions of cover while responding to the threat. Police said the individual later exited the residence and allegedly fired two additional rounds in the direction of the officers.
In response to what investigators described as an immediate threat, one officer discharged their service weapon. According to police, the man was struck and fell inside the front doorway of the residence.
Additional officers, including members of the Omaha Police K9 Unit, responded to secure the scene following the shooting. Emergency personnel determined that the man had died at the location. Investigators said a firearm was recovered near him.
